Our Review

The Setup

Nick Summerland is settling into his new life as a Medium at a supernatural academy where the dead are not only present but actively involved in the curriculum. Book two picks up with Nick navigating the dynamics of dating his Shade girlfriend while pushing deeper into the magical knowledge he needs to save his best friend Ben’s life. Then the Dean drops a special case in his lap: a fiery, alluring Specter who needs help that only Nick can provide.

The mystery at the heart of this installment gives the story real momentum. Someone — or something — is hiding the truth about this Specter’s situation, and the forces working against Nick are deadlier than anything he faced in Limbo. It is a solid paranormal setup that balances the academy slice-of-life with genuine stakes.

What Works

D.L. Bacon continues to demonstrate a level of craft that stands out in this space. The prose is clean, the editing is tight, and the pacing never drags. Multiple reviewers specifically called out the writing quality, and it shows. This is not a book that reads like a rough draft pushed to market.

Nick’s character development deserves particular praise. Despite his growing power, he remains relatable and never crosses into overpowered territory. He has to work for every advantage, and that grounded quality makes him far more engaging than the typical academy MC who stumbles into godlike abilities. His harem also grows at a measured pace — no sudden flood of women throwing themselves at him — which gives each relationship room to breathe and feel earned.

The world-building around the afterlife and how mortals interact with ghosts is genuinely inventive. Bacon has created a magic system that feels internally consistent, and the academy setting provides natural structure for the plot without feeling formulaic.

What Doesn’t

A few readers noticed continuity errors, including Nick’s spiritual energy color changing from purple to electric blue without explanation. These are minor issues, but they stand out in an otherwise well-polished book. For a series that builds carefully on established details, consistency matters.

The pacing, while generally strong, may test patience for readers who prefer their harem fiction to move faster on the spice front. This is a story that prioritizes plot and character over frequent intimate encounters.

The Heat

The spice level sits at a comfortable moderate. The intimate moments that do appear are meaningful within the story and tied to the progression of Nick’s relationships rather than dropped in as filler. The supernatural angle adds a unique flavor — literally, given that his partners are ghosts and specters — but readers looking for explicit, high-frequency encounters should look elsewhere.

Bottom Line

Ghost Academy 2: Fall Term is a strong sequel that expands the world, deepens the mystery, and develops its characters without losing sight of what made the first book work. Bacon writes with a confidence and polish that many indie harem authors would benefit from studying. If you want a supernatural academy harem that treats its plot and characters with as much care as its spice, this series belongs on your reading list.

The Verdict

Ghost Academy 2 builds impressively on its predecessor with stronger mysteries, measured harem growth, and a well-grounded MC. The pacing is tight, the editing is polished, and Bacon avoids the common sequel trap of overloading the roster. If you enjoyed book one, this delivers more of what worked without sacrificing quality.
